Dr. Walter Bersch

Dr Bersch was born on 7th April 1954 in Boppard on the Rhine and grew up in the district of Oppenhausen. He is married with 2 children.
He has been Mayor of Boppard since 1st August 1997, was elected in 17th November 1996 with a margin of 56.8% and  re-elected on 10th April 2005 with a margin of 57,2 %. Before that he had been spokesman for members of the SPD party in the German Bundestag in Bonn.


After taking A-levels at the Johanneskloster School in Lahnstein, he studied politics with the degrees in Educational Science, Law and Economics.


He is a member of: the SPD Party (Labour Party), the “Arbeiterwohlfahrt” (Workers’ Welfare Organisation),  the VERDI Union, the German Federation for the Protection of the Environment and Nature Conservation, Greenpeace, The Association for Nature Conservation and Ornithology in Rhineland-Palatinate, Volkshochschule Boppard (Association for Adult Education).

He was: in the board of management of the AOK Health Insurance from 1988 - 1997,
chairman of the Eintracht Oppenhausen Sports Club from 1980 - 1997, chairmann of the “Forum Middle-Rhine-Valley” from 2000 - 2006. From 2003 he has been chairman in the organisation “Development For the Restoration of the St. Pankratius Church” (Interior) in Herschwiesen.

He was Village Spokesman for the district of Oppenhausen from 1984 - 1997, Member of the German Bundestag in 1994, member of the county coucil from 1984 - 1997 and again from 1999 until present day.
